In 1951, Henrietta Lacks went to Johns Hopkins—the only nearby facility that treated Black patients during segregation—seeking treatment for cervical cancer.
Seeing that the cells in her biopsied tumor doubled every day without dying, they were cultured and spread worldwide without Lacks' knowledge, as consent was not required at the time.
The cultures enabled the development of several vaccines, IVF-related research, and major cancer drugs long after Lacks' death.
In 2023, Lacks' living relatives reached a settlement for compensation for the use of "HeLa" cells.
