A researcher recently discovered an interview from 1967 between groundbreaking journalist Joan Didion and the Grateful Dead, years before the band became an institution.

  1. In 1967, the legendary writer was sent to San Francisco by The Saturday Evening Post to investigate the city's burgeoning countercultural movement.

  2. The jam band had just released its first album and was only two years into its existence.

  3. A portion of the interview was featured in Didion's book "Slouching Towards Bethlehem," but the full piece wasn't discovered until 2026, when it was found in the archives of Didion and her husband, John Gregory Dunne, at the New York Public Library.
