Officials justified the decision by saying the music, then still in its infancy, was “detrimental to both the health and morals of our youth and community.”
The ban was inspired by a performance from Chuck Higgins and his Orchestra at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on June 2, 1956, which a police lieutenant said featured teenagers “engaged in suggestive, stimulating and tantalizing motions induced by the provocative rhythms of an all-negro band.”
After the story hit the national media on June 5, the city grew concerned that tourism would suffer and walked back the ban.
