Graffiti dates back to at least ancient Pompeii, where citizens scrawled messages to one another on public walls

Findings

Additional insights we found via Smithsonian Magazine

  1. Archaeologists have discovered over 11,000 examples of graffiti in the ancient city that date back to 79 CE

  2. Residents drew various figures and announcements on homes, temples, and walls, much of it preserved by volcanic ash

  3. While some messages were clearly intended to be artistic, scholars have noted that the ancient graffiti has more in common with social media (including jokes, restaurant reviews, and early memes) than with the tags and murals we associate today with street art
