Empress Joséphine Bonaparte, an amateur botanist and plant collector, had both poison ivy and poison sumac in her garden near Paris by the early 1880s.
Poison ivy was even depicted by a famous flower artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté, better known for his work on roses and lilies.
Japanese chemist Rikō Majima discovered the chemical structure of urushiol, the toxin found in both the lacquer tree and poison ivy.
