Once sold as an ornamental plant, poison ivy can actually look varied—its colors change seasonally from reddish to green to yellow. It typically has three broad, shiny, tear-shaped leaves. But it sometimes may have a different number of leaves, and its edges can be serrated.
Poison ivy grows in moist areas in most of the US. It's been found everywhere except Alaska and Hawaii.
Poison oak is a shrub found most often in the western US. It can grow as high as six feet. Its leaves look deceptively like oak leaves, and it can grow as a vine or shrub, with three or more leaflets in a group.
Poison sumac is found in swampy areas. It has smooth surfaces, pointed tips, and 7-13 leaflets per stem.
Some people have immediate hypersensitivity to poisonous plants—breaking out in a rash within minutes—whereas others have delayed hypersensitivity and may not have a rash for hours.
Wash urishol off immediately with cold water and soap to try to prevent skin absorption of the stuff—warm water will open your pores and allow you to further absorb it.
