Poison ivy is in the same family as mangoes, cashews, and pistachios—and they all produce oily urushiol in their raw unprocessed state, and chewing mango skin can produce blister rashes

Findings

Additional insights we found via Smithsonian

  1. Chewing mango skin can cause blistering due to the urushiol it contains.

  2. Cashews and pistachios are either sold without their shells or are heat-treated to remove any remaining oil.

  3. Poison ivy only seems to lead to allergic responses in humans, other primates, and guinea pigs. Other animals can both interact with the plant and eat it without becoming sickened or developing a rash.
