Scientists testing how climate change affected plants found in a years-long simulation study that poison ivy grew 70% faster than it did without extra carbon dioxide

Findings

Additional insights we found via NPR

  1. The experiments in the 1990s were designed to simulate potential 2050 conditions, using carefully controlled circular forest plots with gas pumped into them.

  2. Trees in these conditions grew about 18% faster with this higher carbon dioxide concentration, but poison ivy was the speediest of all—beating out all the other trees and vines.

  3. Poison ivy's urushiol, the oily substance that leads to allergic responses, also became even more potent, for reasons the researchers have not yet unraveled.
