One of the most famous portraits ever taken is 'Afghan Girl' (1984) by Steve McCurry, yet the subject Sharbat Gula went much of her life without being identified or benefitting from the image's success.

Gula was not credited until 2002 for her role in the famous National Geographic cover, and continued to live in poverty after the photo was taken.
She was 12 when the photo was taken at a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan, after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
She spent much of her life in displacement and experienced many hardships before eventually being moved to Italy, where she now resides, after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
In a 2022 interview, she expressed regret that the photo was ever taken, because it stirred problems for her throughout her life.
