  1. South African photojournalist Kevin Carter captured a young child suffering from starvation during a famine in Sudan and sold the image to The New York Times, where it gained public attention.

  2. Carter faced criticism for taking her picture instead of helping. Carter said that he waited for the image, then chased the bird away, and watched the child continue their journey.

  3. Months after winning the Pulitzer Prize for the image, Carter took his own life. He partially cited guilt and trauma from witnessing the awful scenes he had photographed.

  4. The fate of the child remained unknown until 2011, when reporters discovered that the "little girl" was in fact a little boy. According to his father, the boy had survived the famine but died of fever in 2007.
