In October 2009, Falcon Heene's parents reported that the six-year-old boy was floating away in a homemade helium balloon.
Later that day, following widespread coverage by major news outlets and a major search, Falcon emerged from the garage attic where he had been hiding the whole time.
In a subsequent interview with Larry King, Falcon revealed that he didn't come out of the house during the search because “you guys said that we did it for the show.”
His televised comment sparked accusations that his parents staged the hoax to land a reality TV show of their own, which they deny.
Falcon’s father, an amateur scientist, pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public servant, and his mother pleaded guilty to filing a false report to authorities.
Netflix released a documentary in 2025 that chronicled the event and aftermath.
