When you complete a CAPTCHA on a website to prove you are human, you may be unknowingly training algorithms for self-driving cars, whose systems require training data to help identify crosswalks, bicycles, and other outdoor objects.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Medium

  1. The "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart" puzzle presents images that computers struggle to solve, making it useful for preventing bots from accessing sites.

  2. By using real-world images that these algorithms find challenging, these puzzles can serve a second purpose: enhancing object-detection algorithms for autonomous driving systems and products such as Google Street View and Google Maps.
