Watch how deep-sea mining equipment collects and processes polymetallic nodules—metal-rich, potato-shaped rocks—from the ocean floor and creates environmentally damaging plumes of sediments.

Additional insights we found via MIT Mechanical Engineering

  1. Once the target seafloor area is identified, a surface vessel deploys an extraction vehicle, which is connected to the surface vessel by a hose.

  2. Once it reaches the seafloor, the vehicle roams the area like a rover and suctions up a slurry of nodules, water, organic matter, and sediments.

  3. These substances are pumped through the connecting hose to the vessel, which extracts the nodules and pumps the remaining waste back into the ocean via a second hose.

  4. This vehicle's collection and the vessel's discharge produce clouds that can suffocate filter-feeding animals and disrupt bioluminescent organisms dependent on light for survival.
