As rock acts grew more popular in the 1960s, the size of their concert venues followed, though live sound technology could not keep up, and often led to poor audio experiences for artists and audiences alike.
Owsley Stanley, sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, one of the 1970s' most renowned live acts, sought to address the problem with "the Wall of Sound," a massive audio setup that combined six sound systems to reduce feedback and distortion.
Nearly every sound made by the band had its own audio channel: Each string on Phil Lesh's bass guitar had its own dedicated speaker.
The system was so expensive to maintain and erect that the band only used it for a short time, from March through October in 1974.
