Washing dishware before putting it in a dishwasher may reduce the appliance's effectiveness because it dynamically adjusts wash time and temperature based on a sensor that detects dirtiness.

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. Although it is recommended that dishes be scraped of leftovers before placing them in the dishwasher, pre-washing them may cause the sensor to underestimate the dirtiness of dishes and result in incomplete washes.

  2. In dishwashers, water heated to 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) is used to rinse dishware, and a light-based turbidity sensor determines how dirty the dishes are by measuring the water's cloudiness.

  3. After the rinse phase, dishwashers release detergents, such as pods that contain a chamber with enzymes to break down food and another with surfactants—chemicals that latch onto and lift particles for easy washing away.

  4. The wash cycle is followed by a sanitizing rinse with hotter water—typically 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the highest temperature a sink can produce—which may be followed by a drying cycle.

  5. Dishwashers recycle water during their cycle, consuming the equivalent of 2.5 minutes of running water and the same amount of electricity as running a television for 12 hours.

  6. The modern dishwasher was invented in the 1880s by Josephine Cochrane, who grew tired of her servants chipping her fine china and debuted the prototype at the Chicago World's Fair.
