Although PFAS, or forever chemicals, are intentionally designed to be extremely stable and long-lasting because of their strong carbon-fluorine bonds, these bonds can be broken by heat, plasma, and supercritical water.

  1. Through ultrasonification, high-frequency sound waves can collapse microscopic bubbles, producing high-temperature implosions whose energy is sufficient to break the chemical bonds of the forever chemicals found in water.

  2. If water contaminated with PFAS is heated and pressurized until it enters a supercritical state—an energy-intensive process—any oxygen in the solution will react rapidly with the forever chemicals, breaking them down.

  3. Plasma—a high-energy state of matter composed of electrons and positive ions—can decompose PFAS, with longer-chained forever chemicals breaking apart more easily than short-chained ones.

  4. Soil contaminated with forever chemicals can be decontaminated in a rotating drum with steel or ceramic balls and supplementary chemicals, as the mechanical force generated by tumbling can break stable bonds.
