Microplastics are entering human food chains through carrots, wheat, and other foodstuffs grown in farmlands fertilized by sewage sludge.

Findings

Additional insights we found via BBC

  1. Sewage sludge is the byproduct left after municipal wastewater is treated, and it is used as organic fertilizer in the US and Europe because it is rich in nutrients and expensive to dispose of.

  2. In Europe, farmland may absorb up to 710 trillion microplastic particles yearly.

  3. Per a 2022 analysis, almost 20 million acres of US cropland are contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—"forever chemicals" that are commonly found in plastic products and do not break down under normal environmental conditions.
