During wash cycles, synthetic fabrics shed millions of plastic microfibers, making them a significant source of global microfiber pollution.

Microplastics released by synthetic fabrics during washing pass through wastewater treatment centers, where they may not be captured before entering oceans, soils, and food chains.
When doing laundry, microfiber release can be reduced by using cold water, larger loads, less detergent, a front-loading washing machine, and drying on a clothesline.
Some companies have developed specialized bags meant to enclose clothing while it washes to capture microfibers, and external filters and specialized laundry balls that catch microfibers as they are released have also been developed.
