There's a fast fashion graveyard in Chile's Atacama Desert full of used clothing from the US, Europe, and Asia.

Additional insights we found via BBC
Around 60,000 tons of used clothing is shipped to this location—among the driest places on Earth—each year. More than half of it ends up in a gigantic landfill.
Due to the cheap materials that fast fashion companies use to make their clothing (think: synthetic materials like polyester rather than natural fibers like cotton), most of these garments aren't biodegradable and will take more than 200 years to disintegrate.
This graveyard of sorts not only threatens the desert's ecosystem, but also the health of many people living in the area.
The primary solution to making sure the landfills don't overtake the surrounding area further is burning the clothing, a process that releases hazardous gases that surrounding residents are forced to inhale.
