  1. However, the 2.5 trillion metric tons of carbon in soil is significantly less than the approximately 40 trillion metric tons stored in the oceans.

  2. Across all biomes with vegetation, from grasslands and savannas to forests and wetlands, soils sequester more carbon than plant life, especially in colder, wetter environments.

  3. Although they cover only 5-8% of Earth's terrestrial surface, wetlands store 20-30% of all estimated organic soil carbon.

  4. Every year, Earth's forests absorb about 15.6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere—about 40% of global emissions—but deforestation, wildfires, and other related events release about 8.1 billion metric tons back into the atmosphere.
