Scientists can determine Earth's past environmental conditions by analyzing sediment cores—accumulated layers of mud and remains of charcoal, pollen, plants, algae, and other organic material.

Additional insights we found via USGS
Sediment cores are collected from lake bottoms, wetlands, estuaries, and oceans, where particles from the surrounding environment are deposited and settle at the bottom.
Elemental and isotope analyses can reveal the occurrence of volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and other phenomena, while the remains of organisms can reveal climatic conditions based on where these organisms preferred to live.
