Permafrost—soil, rocks, and sand that are held together by ice and remain frozen for at least two consecutive years—covers about 15% of the Northern Hemisphere's land area.

Findings

Additional insights we found via NASA

  1. Permafrost may be covered by a thin soil layer—the active layer—which thaws during the summer and refreezes during the winter.

  2. Permafrost is harder than concrete, but when it melts, previously trapped organic matter can be decomposed by microbes, releasing greenhouse gases.

  3. Melting permafrost can also release ancient, potentially dangerous bacteria and viruses, with scientists having discovered microbes more than 400,000 years old.
