Mangrove roots, which have adapted to saltwater, serve as nurseries for many fish, an important component of the Cambodian coastal food web.
After the Cambodian genocide, mangroves were cut to make charcoal for cooking, sparking an ecosystem collapse that harmed shrimp, sardines, crabs, and other marine life.
According to the UN, half of all mangrove forests are at risk of collapse by 2050.
Since 2003, more than 145 acres of mangrove forest along Cambodia's coastline have been protected, and between 2024 and 2026, over 2,000 mangrove saplings have been planted.
