Designated as an essential fish habitat by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, rafts of the brown algae provide habitats for organisms that feed gray triggerfish, mahi mahi, and amberjack, as well as shelter for sea turtles and seabirds.
When currents carry the blooms to the coasts—known as Sargassum inundation events—they can produce brown tides, clog pipes, and cause shores to smell like rotten eggs as they decompose on the beach.
