Whale falls—dead whales that have fallen to the ocean's floor—can provide enough food to spawn a local ecosystem of deep-sea organisms that lasts for decades.

Most deep-sea organisms rely on nutrients that slowly sink to the seafloor, but whale carcasses provide substantial sustenance in stages that last several years.
First, scavengers, such as sleeper sharks and hagfish, consume whale tissue down to the bone at a rate of about 40 to 60 kilograms a day.
Next, invertebrates like mollusks, crustaceans, and worms eat leftover, decomposing tissue.
After about two years, bacteria feed on fats and oils on the whale bones and produce hydrogen sulfide, which creates an ecosystem for an average of 185 sulfur-loving species.
The first whale fall ever studied was accidentally discovered by a submarine expedition in 1987.
