Deep water corals—located throughout the world's ocean basins at depths beyond 200 meters (660 feet)—slowly build small coral gardens in the dark with the help of underwater worms.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

  1. These corals do not rely on photosynthetic organisms for nutrients and feed instead on food that falls from the ocean surface.

  2. Deep water corals form larger reefs over the course of thousands of years.
