Like sea anemones and jellyfish, each coral species forms a symbiotic relationship with distinct species of zooxanthellae, which each provide unique coloration.
When ocean temperatures or sunlight exceed optimal levels, zooxanthellae release harmful chemicals that irritate coral cells, which expel the colorful microorganisms, turning the coral white.
