Flamingos get their pink coloring from carotenoids—pigments of yellow, orange, and red—in their food, but they cannot take on other colorations because their bodies cannot process other pigments.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Animal Club

  1. Flamingo diets mostly consist of brine shrimp, which consume algae that contain carotenoids—the same pigment that gives carrots and tomatoes their warm colors.

  2. Flamingos are born white, but gradually become pinker as they mature and eat more carotenoid-containing shrimp, while other consumed pigments pass through the body unmetabolized and without changing the flamingo's color.
