Virtually all plants are biofluorescent because their photosynthesis is powered by chlorophyll, a pigment that glows red as a way to get rid of excess energy when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Findings

Additional insights we found via The Action Lab

  1. Photosynthetic plants are often associated with the color green because their cells contain chloroplasts housing chlorophyll, which absorbs red and blue light while reflecting green light.

  2. Ultraviolet light absorbed by chlorophyll is re-emitted as less energetic red light, which is almost always absorbed by a neighboring chlorophyll molecule for use in photosynthesis, making it difficult to see biofluorescence in daylight.

  3. Scientists can measure the amount of red light emitted by fluorescing chlorophyll to determine how much photosynthetic activity is occurring within a plant and identify potential photosynthetic stressors.
