The 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded for discovering and developing uses for green fluorescent protein—a biomolecule found in Aequorea victoria, a jellyfish native to the Pacific Northwest.

Findings

Additional insights we found via The Nobel Prize

  1. Japanese biochemist Osamu Shimomura discovered GFP in the 1960s and observed that it emitted green light when exposed to high-frequency ultraviolet light, thereby making Aequorea victoria a biofluorescent organism.

  2. In the 1990s, American biochemist Roger Y. Tsien modified GFP such that it would emit cyan, blue, and yellow light when exposed to UV rays, and, in the early 2000s, created modified versions of a DsRED—a red fluorescent protein found in some corals—that could produce various warm colors, including red, pink, and orange.

  3. American biologist Martin Chalfie successfully used GFP to create fluorescent touch receptor neurons in roundworms, a precursor to its later use in tracking disease progression, such as observing how Alzheimer's disease affects brain cells and how cancer cells form new blood and lymphatic vessels.
