Short-wavelength ultraviolet light was first used medically to treat a disease in the late 1800s, an innovation pioneered by physician Niels Finsen.
In 1895, Finsen first used concentrated UV beams to treat lupus vulgaris, a form of tuberculosis that attacks the skin. He won the 1903 Nobel Prize for this groundbreaking research.
Finsen suffered from a metabolic disease—later identified as Niemann-Pick disease—that caused weakness and fatigue, but he noticed that light made him feel more energetic, which fueled his interest in light therapies.
Finsen's research built off of earlier work in the 1870s, which indicated that UV light inhibited bacterial growth, and Finsen sought to investigate if tissues attacked by bacteria could be helped with light.
