In 1933, British researchers dripped filtered nasal fluids from a sick colleague into ferrets, and the animals quickly developed “ferret flu.”
This experiment established the basis for modern flu vaccines.
The researchers traced the course of the illness in 64 ferrets in 1933, and observed similarities to how humans experienced the flu.
The researchers confirmed their findings by developing a serological test that found the animals developed antibodies against the virus, confirming after years of controversy that the disease was caused by a virus, not bacteria.
