In sketches from the early 1500s—centuries after glasses started to be used—da Vinci illustrates correcting vision via a water-filled dome or bowl.
The first usable contact lenses would not be developed until 1888, when German physiologist Adolf Eugen Fick fitted whole-eye glass lenses onto patients.
In 1938, American opticians Theodore Obrig and Ernest Mullen developed the first all-plastic contact lenses, designed to be easier to fit and more comfortable while still covering the entire frontal surface of the eye.
In 1948, Kevin Tuohy, a California optometrist, patented the first contact lenses that covered just the cornea, but it was not until the next decade that Czech chemist Otto Wichterle developed flexible, water-absorbent lenses.
