The system was designed to capture images from a camera several times a minute and share them across an internal network, allowing those connected to see whether there was fresh coffee available.
In 1993, when web browsers became capable of displaying images, the images started being sent to a public webpage, which popularized the computer lab and the scientists' efforts.
After 10 years, the feed was turned off, and the coffee pot was later sold at auction for £3,350.
