Looking for a novel way to promote their 2001 record "Amnesiac," Radiohead began working with ActiveBuddy, the people behind the popular SmarterChild chatbot, to create GooglyMinotaur, their own AOL instant messenger chatbot based on a character from the album.
The band was already technologically innovative, both in its music and its marketing: In 2000, they released a full, free online stream of its album "Kid A" before its official release date, a move that was nearly unheard of in the industry at the time.
GooglyMinotaur was released in June 2001 and shut down in March 2002; by then, it had sent around 60 million messages to almost 1 million people.
