The design of a psychiatric ward in Norway aims to integrate more circadian rhythm-friendly lights as part of its treatment protocols for conditions including psychosis, severe depression, and more.

In one recent study from the Trondheim-based facility, clinicians divided 476 patients with short-term intensive care needs into groups exposed to either standard hospital lighting or blue-depleted lighting and found that, although overall hospital length of stay was similar across the groups, patients in the blue-depleted lighting group showed less aggression and greater clinical improvement.
Blue light can boost attention and reaction times, but these short wavelengths signal to the brain that the sun is still up, which prevents the body from releasing melatonin, a hormone that aids sleep.
The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Research is aiming to launch new studies on how changes in lighting could help people living in institutional settings, such as care homes, and reduce aggression and agitation among dementia patients.
In the future, data from wearable devices that track sleep and activity patterns may help inform clinicians about disturbances in circadian rhythms that could potentially be treated with light therapy to shift rhythms to realign them.
Red light is less likely to disrupt circadian rhythms and is recommended for nighttime lighting. Some research suggests later-day and nighttime light exposure is linked to conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
