Certain visible light therapies, when applied at specific intensities, can be used to treat skin conditions, including acne.
Findings
Additional insights we found via Mayo Clinic
Acne affects an estimated 90% of adolescents worldwide. It can also affect other ages.
Blue light therapy, which is also used to treat conditions like jaundice, can be used to help treat acne. The light can reduce and kill bacteria on the skin that may otherwise cause inflammation in clogged pores.
Red light therapy can sometimes help treat acne and aspects of skin aging.
Over-the-counter red light therapies and phototherapy wands may not have the same intensity or quality as those used by a dermatologist, so people should speak to their doctor before using such non-professional-grade products.
Acne light therapy research has had limitations, including small sample sizes, short durations, and no control groups, so more evidence is needed to help inform this approach and improve any home-based devices.
