Additional insights we found via American Museum of Natural History
Green blood is the result of levels of green bile pigment called biliverdin that are 10 to 15 times higher than the lethal concentration in humans. This pigment in the human body—the result of cellular waste—is converted to bilirubin, which causes jaundice in humans at high concentrations if it isn't excreted from the body.
Most vertebrates, including humans, have bright red blood due to heme, an iron-containing part of hemoglobin inside red blood cells that binds to oxygen in the lungs and carries it to the tissues. The iron makes heme look reddish-brown.
Green-blooded skinks have lime-green blood due to high concentrations of biliverdin, which also results in their green tongues, bones, muscles, and mucous membranes.
Bilirubin, the same substance that can cause jaundice in humans and is also derived from biliverdin, is toxic to the parasites that cause malaria in humans.
