Explore the microscopic composition of blood.

The red stuff currently pumping throughout your body is a type of connective tissue that is both a solid and a liquid. The liquid portion—plasma—acts as a carrier for the solid portion, which includes blood cells and their biological brethren. Your body is constantly refreshing its supply of blood, creating new cells to replace those that have expired or died. This article overviews some lesser-known facts about blood (and why it's not always red).

Blood is made up of several cells with various functions and short lifespans, so the body must have a constant supply of replacements. These replacements are created by hematopoietic stem cells, rare cells that live in bone marrow and can regenerate themselves and blood cells.

Lacking a nucleus and other organelles to maximize space for oxygen-carrying hemoglobin and enhance maneuverability through narrow capillaries, there are about four times as many red blood cells and platelets as all other cell types in the body combined. However, about half of the body's cell biomass consists of skeletal myocytes, or muscle fibers.

Blood's primary purpose is to ferry oxygen and nutrients to cells in need while collecting cell waste and byproducts for removal. It also enables the body's repair and immune systems to traverse our internal landscape to address cell damage or external invaders, such as viruses and parasites. Zooming out from the exact roles of blood's various cells, the fluid connective tissue also assists with maintaining homeostasis via temperature regulation and pH balance.

White blood cells are responsible for protecting the human body from infection. This video uses biophysical data from Harvard researchers to accurately demonstrate what goes on inside one white blood cell as it works within the immune system.

Blood's importance to humanity is best summarized this way: without it, we die. This importance naturally begets assumptions about its medicinal properties, many of which appear accessible through drinking or eating the fluid connective tissue. This article details the history of blood drinking, from ancient Roman gladiators to modern-day sanguinarians.

Since ancient times, blood has been seen as a semi-magical substance. Alchemists theorized it was a mixture of the four elements. Others proposed it was one of four bodily fluids whose balance dictated health. This 2019 essay by a hematologist reviews blood's reputation across cultures and centuries.

About 55% of your blood volume is plasma, the liquid part of blood created from water, proteins, minerals, and salts absorbed through the digestive tract. This 49-minute podcast episode explores the business of plasma—part of a global industry expected to be worth $50B by 2029.

When we're born, about three-quarters of our bodies are composed of water, dropping to an average of 55-60% for the average adult. The lungs are over 80% water, the kidneys and spleen about 80%, and the heart and brain are approximately three-quarters composed of water—about the same moisture as a banana.

Despite claims that a person's body replaces itself every seven to 10 years, the rate at which cells die and are replaced varies by cell type. Gastrointestinal cells that line the digestive tract and stomach last only a few days, while some heart muscle cells and most neurons are around from birth until death.

We're trying. Scientists are currently working on creating viable synthetic blood, an alternative to the presently relied-upon donations that manage to fall short of demand. More than half of the world's nations struggle to meet their population's need for blood. This article details current and historical efforts to develop synthetic blood, a venture that started more than 400 years ago.

The antigens and Rh factors of blood cells (which determines your blood type) must be compatible with your immune system—which is why blood transfusions between patients must have matching types. In a mismatch, the immune system will attack and destroy donor blood cells, triggering a potentially fatal reaction.

The blood group that determines whether you have type A, B, AB, or O blood was discovered near the turn of the 20th century. This short academic article dives into three main theories about the evolution and emergence of blood groups, the exact nature of which remains unclear.

In the US, donating plasma twice a week can earn you $400 a month. But this system only works by targeting people who need the money most. Plasma clinics are placed in low-income zip codes, and frequent donation may increase health risks.

Bone marrow contains two types of stem cells: Skeletal (develop into bone, cartilage, and more) and hematopoietic, which create new blood cells. The latter are critical in bone marrow transplants, and give the recipient the ability to create healthy blood cells to fight diseases like leukemia.

The cardiovascular or circulatory system moves blood throughout the body, ensuring cells have necessary nutrients and removing any waste. Click through this interactive 3D guide to explore the system as it crisscrosses the body via arteries, veins, and capillaries. This guide also includes similar breakdowns of the body and its other processes.

YourGenome.org furnishes a collection of information on cells and how they work. Every body has trillions of cells, each serving a specific function: making proteins, processing chemicals, and creating energy. Every cell contains a genome, a set of instructions for the cell's function. Brush up on your cells for a better grasp on genetics.

Every blood vessel is lined with endothelial cells that act as filters between blood and the rest of the body. In the brain, these cells are tightly packed together to keep a close watch on what substances can access the vital organ. This protective measure poses an obstacle to drugmakers looking to deliver drugs to the well-defended brain for conditions like Alzheimer's. Watch a quick overview here.

Stem cells hold promise for many future medical applications, but only one type of stem cell is currently approved for use. This page offers a clear description of adult stem cells called hematopoietic stem cells, which create the full range of blood cells and are approved for use in treatments such as bone marrow transplants.

Stem cells are different from other cells because they are capable of creating copies of themselves and producing other types of cells. For example, the ones found in our brains, bones, or muscles. Curious about stem cells? Here's a breakdown of how they work.

In this tour, users can observe the dynamic processes that occur within the basic units of the human body, including the production and transport of proteins and the assembly and disassembly of microtubules—thin, cylindrical structures that provide structural support and a means of moving material within the cell.

While some organic structures are mostly composed of non-cellular components (e.g., collagen and calcium phosphate minerals in bones), tissues and organs composed of connected cells rely on specialized proteins and connections to create watertight seals that protect cells within the interior from environmental molecules.

In the mid-1600s, Robert Hooke identified compartment-like structures—which he called cells—in cork, and Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered bacteria in samples of his dental scrapings. Almost 200 years later, Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann showed that plants and animals, respectively, are composed of cells, proving that cells are the foundation of all living things.

It takes about 500,000 carbon atoms lined up next to one another to span the thickness of human hair, and over 99.9994% of the mass of each is contained in the nucleus. About 99.999999999999% of an atom's volume lies outside this nucleus, where electrons exist in clouds of probability. Removing these clouds, the Empire State Building would be the size of a rice grain.

Your heart does amazing things day in and day out. Its main job is crucial: It keeps oxygenated blood circulating throughout your body. Did you know that, other than your cornea, every cell in your body gets blood from your heart? You may not think...

While prokaryotes contain one or more cells with free-floating genetic material in a region called the nucleoid, eukaryotes possess a nucleus specialized for DNA storage. Plant cells possess cell walls—a reinforced structure surrounding their membrane—made of cellulose, while fungal cell walls contain chitin. Animal cells have lysosomes housing enzymes that break down biomolecules.

Embryonic stem cells emerge around five days after fertilization, during the blastocyst stage of embryonic development. At this point, the embryo consists of about 100 to 150 cells and forms a hollow structure, and these cells are the ultimate source of all other cell types during fetal development.

The heart is the fleshy muscle at the heart (pun intended) of the circulatory system. The heart is segmented into four chambers: two for intake (the right side) and two for output (the left side). Controlled via the autonomic nervous system, also known as the involuntary nervous system, the heart typically beats 60 to 100 times per minute, sending nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood throughout the body.

After fertilization, when a sperm cell fuses with an egg, the resulting stem cell is described as totipotent—capable of transforming into any type of body cell or embryonic structures (e.g., placenta). Once differentiated into multipotent cells, they can only specialize further within specific cell type families, such as hematopoietic cells that become platelets and red and white blood cells.

As cells get larger, their volume grows much faster than the surface area through which nutrients and waste products pass, creating a bottleneck that eventually causes cells to die. This forces nearly all organisms visible to the naked eye to comprise enormous numbers of smaller cells, such as the approximately 30 trillion found in the average adult human.

Human life is made possible by the body's ten major systems, which maintain homeostasis by responding to incoming sensory and biochemical input. Each system must work independently and collaboratively for the body to maintain health and respond appropriately to its internal and external environments. The bones of the skeletal system, for example, give the body its shape and protect organs while also facilitating movement with the muscular system.

Small but powerful, the brain constitutes only about 2 percent of the human body. However, it runs jus about everything, day and night, all year round. Learn about the different parts of the human brain, as well as its unique defenses, like the blood brain barrier in this four-minute video.
