In the 1950s, Alan Turing developed a mathematical model to explain why animals have stripes, spots, and other patterns based on differences in how quickly two interacting chemicals spread throughout a developing organism.

  1. In Turing's animal patterning model, while activators, which may produce a certain pigment, slowly spread, they also trigger a faster-spreading suppressor that can quickly surround the activators and limit the pigment to isolated regions, such as spots.

  2. According to Turing's equations, animals could develop distinct patterns based on the speeds of the activator and suppressor substances, with smaller differences allowing the activators to spread further and connect before being surrounded, thereby forming stripes, bands, and more complex patterns.

  3. Since the development of Turing's mechanism, scientists have identified animals whose patterns involve additional or entirely different mechanisms, such as interactions between pigment cells in zebrafish, small molecules pushing and pulling against larger ones in boxfish, and the activation of pigment-related genes in brown anoles.
