Studies on sleeping cats, rats, fish, and finches show that their brains fire as if performing actions from waking life.
Domestic cats were among the first animals studied in dream research, beginning in the 1960s. That work led to the discovery in cats of a brainstem structure called the pons, which seemed to regulate REM sleep and produce partial paralysis.
Spiders and insects, research indicates, also have REM-like sleep.
