Sleeping on a problem does seem to help—in fact research published in 2026 suggests scientists can seed people's dreams with sound cues about a difficult puzzle during REM sleep and they'll be better able to solve it.

Findings

Additional insights we found via TIME

  1. In a small study involving 20 people, sleeping people exposed to the soundtrack that they'd listened to while unable to solve specific brain teasers went on to better solve the problems the following morning after they were exposed to those sound cues during sleep.

  2. Participants solved 42% of the dream-related puzzles but only 17% of the non-dream-related puzzles.

  3. Lucid dreamers proved less able to solve the puzzles, perhaps because that type of sleeping may be too much like waking consciousness or participants couldn't engage in the type of forgetting and letting go that may occur during non-lucid sleep, keeping them fixated on incorrect problem-solving methods they'd already tried.

  4. The results don't prove that guided dreaming can yield better solutions—other factors, such as heightened curiosity about certain puzzles, may be partly at work—but the researchers say this should prompt further research.

  5. Researchers only played the soundtracks, reminding participants of their earlier problem-solving attempts, once they'd confirmed via brain monitoring that the participants were in the deep-sleep stage known as REM.
