  1. Sleep is a natural process critical to maintaining life—a process conserved throughout evolution in just about any animal with a brain.

  2. Generally speaking, the first three stages of sleep involve increasingly deep phases of non-REM sleep, followed by a roughly 90-minute period of REM sleep, a cycle that repeats throughout the night.

  3. How much time humans spend in each stage of sleep differs throughout life, with newborns spending the greatest amount of time in the REM stage.
