As our bodies settle into sleep, brain changes include reduced blood flow to the brain, heightened cerebrospinal fluid circulation, and fluctuating levels of neurotransmitters that allow neurons to fire more in sync with one another—a process that scientists still don't understand.
Recent studies are focused on improving understanding of the stages between sleep and wakefulness and on seeking insights that could help unravel sleep disorders and better address them.
During sleep, brain waves occur at lower frequencies and higher amplitudes, as indicated by electroencephalographic recordings. Studying such waves can allow scientists to pinpoint where someone is on the sleep-wake spectrum.
Salvador Dali, like modern scientists, was fascinated by the hypnagogic state, which is when we're just starting to drift off to sleep and can still experience mental imagery.
In the 1940s, Dali would hold a key above an upside-down plate as he drifted off, and when his hand slackened, and he dropped it, he would abruptly awaken—and paint—hoping to benefit from a creativity infusion at that hypnagogic state.
