Dolphins never fully fall asleep, keeping half their brains awake so they can breathe at the water's surface while resting.

As the brain cycles from wakeful rest to deep sleep, different brain waves emerge. Alpha waves occur during restful waking states, while theta waves can be associated with light sleep and meditation. Delta waves are observed during deep sleep—but REM cycles more closely resemble active awake states.

For the first time in over a decade, a dolphin gave birth at Brookfield Zoo, and she didn’t do it alone. Right beside her was another dolphin, acting as a doula. Why do dolphins support each other this way? The answer reveals something incredible about how animals care for one another.

Bats and dolphins produce sound to reflect off surfaces and create a mental image of their surroundings. Owls' faces are dish-shaped to help funnel sounds to their ears, including that of mice moving along leaves or snow. Pinnipeds, such as seals and walruses, hear in both air and water.

African bush elephants typically sleep for about 2 hours per 24-hour day, coming in well under a human's recommended seven-hour minimum. Other animals also appear to skimp on sleep, by human standards, without the consequences humans associate with being sleep deprived. This academic article details the sleeping habits of animals that appear to thrive on fewer than 40 winks and explores whether their sleep processes are just built different.

Have you ever noticed the wide-ranging differences in sleep between humans and animals? Sleep as a necessity is present amongst all animal species, but the specific patterns of sleep vary widely. Just think of the differences between how an owl, a whale, and a horse might sleep. This helpful resource from the Sleep Foundation explores the relations between human and animal sleep, complete with some fascinating statistics about sleep patterns throughout the animal kingdom!

Sleep is a highly specialized and complex process that begins via signals from a region of the brain called the hypothalamus. As explained in this overview video from The Economist, the hypothalamus maintains our circadian rhythm by using light cues from our environment to regulate sleep via a compound known as melatonin. Once asleep, the brain begins the "sleep cycle" and progresses through the four stages of sleep over and over again each night.

These ripples were known to quickly replay neuronal sequences during sleep for consolidation. While awake, they help the brain prioritize memories to remember, and their disruption can impair memory formation.

The seahorse-shaped structure transfers short-term memories to long-term storage during sleep. It is located in the temporal lobes, above each ear, and aids in spatial navigation and remembering directions.

During sleep, the brain appears to process memories from the day and encode them into long-term storage. At the same time, the brain prunes old memories out of the brain that are no longer useful. Understanding this process also sheds light a various neurodegenerative diseases.

Each stage plays a key role in memory, repair, restoration, and other key biological functions. The full cycle generally proceeds from light sleep and deep rest into vivid REM dreaming, which repeats between three and five times nightly.

Neuroscience suggests that connections responsible for motion made during embryonic brain development—such as those connecting hearing and movement pathways that allow reactive motion when started—are duplicated and connected to the larynx in some animals. This allows some mammals and song-learning birds to speak, provided they have the necessary physiological structures.

Skimping on sleep lengthens reaction times and blunts decision-making skills. At a certain point, the brain will try to sneak sleep where it can, shifting sections offline even as you remain awake. Going without sleep raises blood pressure, undermines the immune system, and increases one's risk of dementia.

This thought-provoking piece highlights newer research suggesting sleep twitches may not be random dream leftovers, but instead a crucial way our brains map and understand our bodies. From sleeping rat pups to dreaming octopi, this biological mapping system appears universal across animal species.

All vertebrates, including solitary animals, exhibit yawning behavior, and, despite long-standing beliefs, studies show no correlation between yawning and oxygen levels. Contagious yawning may enhance group coordination and vigilance in animals and involves advanced social cognitive mechanisms.

Yale University scientists restored basic cellular activity and circulatory function in pig brains about four hours after death with a synthetic cocktail of preservatives and nutrients. This work— which didn't restart electricity activity in the brain or consciousness—could help advance future human stroke and brain injury treatments.

A 2025 study found that Antarctic krill, a food chain staple in the Southern Ocean, have an internal biological clock that helps regulate its swimming patterns and helps the tiny shrimp-like animals adapt to daily and seasonal environmental changes. Better understanding of how the clock and light cues interact may help scientists understand how well the species will respond to pronounced climate change in the polar region.

As you stare into the distance while washing your home's seemingly never-ending pile of dishes, the brain activates its default mode network. This collection of "task-negative" brain regions associated with memory, reward, action consideration, and prediction alight with activity when humans mentally turn inward, possibly giving rise to the brain's ability to wander and humans' ability to construct internal narratives about the world.

Despite only being 2% of the weight of a human body, the average adult brain consumes 20% of its energy, with the majority of it spent on maintaining homeostasis—the stable equilibrium conditions of temperature, acidity, blood sugar, and other properties in the body. For infants, the consumption is closer to 50%.

Adults typically spend 10% to 20% of the night in deep sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep, with the rest of the night spent either in light sleep or REM states.

Although distinctions exist between the two halves—language processing is left-oriented, and emotions are right-oriented—signals are sent along neural pathways between the hemispheres and across different regions to collectively process information about external stimuli.

Until the 1950s, humans believed whales were mute. Once American underwater surveillance systems caught their sounds during the Cold War, the perception of the creatures changed, leading humans to campaign for whaling bans and long-term conservation efforts. These captivating whale songs can be heard throughout the ocean.

For mammals, long periods of inactivity can lead to health problems—blood flow slows and pools, veins kink and distort, and clots potentially form. Hibernation takes this risk to the extreme, yet for decades why animals like bears did not exhibit...

Research shows that psychedelics may induce something called "critical periods" in the adult brain, which can make our brains more open to learning and changing, like they once were back in early childhood. Psychedelics similarly change how social creatures like octopuses behave, which demonstrates that these animals could help us better understand our own neurobiology.

The natural world around us is endlessly inspiring, and fascinating, and often very odd too: like when researchers snapped a photo of Bolivian river dolphins swimming around with a Beni anaconda snake in their mouths, for example.

We breathe without thinking about it thanks to the body's respiratory system and autonomic nervous system, which controls vital functions. Breathing transports oxygen to the body's cells to keep them working and clears the body of carbon...

Despite being a near-nightly occurrence, we remember very few of our dreams. Researchers believe reduced activity in regions where memories are stored, a different neurochemical environment during sleep, and rapid transition during waking contribute to this phenomenon.

Elite athletes emphasize consistent sleep routines, dark and cool environments, the well-placed nap, and tools like eye masks, white noise machines, and supplements like melatonin (particularly for jet lag). This priority belies a core principle: recovery and performance are inseparable. Read more ways Olympians "sleepmaxx" here.

Nicknamed the "unicorn of the sea," narwhals have no teeth aside from two canines that grow directly forward as tusks. For roughly 85% of females, they stay embedded in the bone. For males, they grow into large, spirally tusks that are full of nerve endings and blood vessels. Scientists today believe that tusks likely formed for sexual selection purposes and eventually evolved to assist in other processes, such as hunting.
