When hibernating underwater, turtles' body surfaces, which are rich in blood vessels, take up dissolved oxygen from the surrounding pond water to oxygenate their blood, with their butts being among the most blood vessel-rich.
Some aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles hibernate underwater to escape harsh winter weather and significant temperature fluctuations, living off stored energy while their metabolism slows.
In the absence of dissolved oxygen, turtles can survive for a couple of months underwater while hibernating by switching to a metabolic state that does not require oxygen, though this causes acid buildup in tissues.
