Starfish are invertebrates—they lack a backbone—and while most exhibit pentametric radial symmetry due to having five arms radiating from a central disk, some can possess more than 40.

Additional insights we found via Key West Aquarium

  1. Starfish have a skeleton made of calcium carbonate plates under their skin, which provides support and protection.

  2. Lacking a central brain, starfish instead sense and respond to light, chemical cues, touch, temperature, and position using a combination of tube feet along their arms, an eye spot at the end of each arm, and a sensory nerve net on their skin.

  3. Instead of blood, starfish pump water from their surroundings through internal canals, from which oxygen passes through a thin membrane and spreads throughout the body.

  4. Water is also pumped in and out of the starfish's tube feet to enable motion, resembling a hydraulic system.

  5. Many starfish consume bivalves, like clams and mussels, by prying open their shells, pushing out their cardiac stomach, which secretes digestive enzymes to break down food externally, and then moving prey into their pyloric stomach, where digestion is completed.

  6. Most sea stars reproduce by releasing sperm and egg cells, which meet in the water to form an embryo, but a few species split in half or shed an arm that regenerates into a new starfish.
