Rather than removable armor like snail shells, turtle shells are part of the organism's skeleton and consist of 50 to 60 fused bones that grow with the organism.

Additional insights we found via Tennessee Aquarium

  1. A turtle's upper shell, or carapace, consists of fused ribs and vertebrae that connect to the turtle's spine and protect underlying organs.

  2. The carapace is covered in individual segments called scutes, which are made of keratin and peel off in layers over time.

  3. A turtle's lower shell, or plastron, protects its underside and connects to the carapace via a bony bridge.

  4. Because it contains nerves and blood vessels, if a turtle's shell is damaged, the organism feels pain and may die from exposure of its internal organs.
