Amplified vibrations are sent to the snail-shell-shaped cochlea, which houses fluid that ripples with these vibrations, moving various hair cells that detect sounds of different pitches.
Bends in hair-like projections atop these cells open channels that drive the movement of ions, creating electrical signals that the auditory nerve carries to the brain.
