Sonar, or sound navigation and ranging, uses reflected sound waves to map and detect seafloor features, marine organisms, and other obstacles.

Findings

Additional insights we found via NOAA

  1. Knowing that sound travels about 1,500 meters per second (3,400 miles per hour) in water, sonar systems can use the time between when sound pulses are emitted and when they are received by devices called transducers to calculate the location, shape, and texture of distant objects.

  2. Some animals, like dolphins and bats, use a biological version of sonar, called echolocation, to navigate their environment and locate food.

  3. Because the speed of sound varies with the material it travels through, sonar systems are often accompanied by other technologies that measure the properties of the surrounding medium, including water density, salinity, and temperature.

  4. Sonar is used to construct bathymetric maps—an underwater version of topographic maps—that show the shape and depth of the ocean floor to help navigators travel safely.
